Information Architecture: Blueprints for the Web
Posted on Dec 30, 2006 11:49:03 PM
I’ve always disliked the “Dummies” books—you know, the ones with the bright yellow covers. January 26th, 2001 marks the first birthday of XHTML 1.0 as the W3C recommendation for Web markup. But XHTML has yet to toddle, yet to smile, yet to cry loud enough so as to get the attention of most Web designers.
The problem with XHTML 1.0 isn't a matter of strength, or of importance. XHTML is both strong and important--and not just for markup snobs and hardcore developers. It's not that XHTML 1.0 has a particularly high learning Read the rest of this entry »

First of all, thanks to Andrew, from Sumo, for offering me an Omni beanbag. When Andrew offered me "the world’s most comfortable product", the Sumo Omni, I thought he was joking. So I went to their website to do some research about this Omni product. I found out that Omni has been published in many famous places like TechTV, Globe & Mail, Toronto Star, HGTV, and even Playboy Magazine. Since I was in need of a trendy lounge chair for my Read the rest of this entry »

From yesterday I saw some problems with filebox.ro, the free file hosting company where all my files and vector graphics are stored, so it makes download impossible. For how long ? I don’t know, and I’m truly sorry for any inconvenience this may cause to you.
They have been DDOS attacked, their servers were floode, etc. So not even they don’t know when this will go back to normal.

You have a website full of information, and you want to make it easier for people to reuse it—but what format should you publish it in?
You’ve looked at various XML schemas and microformats, but none of them really describes all the information that you want to publish. Should you invent a new format? It’s tempting, but if you could use an existing standard, your data would be immediately interoperable with Read the rest of this entry »

As workers on the web today, we are dealing with many technologies that have been stable for a long time.
HTML 4.01 was made a recommendation in 1999, XHTML 1.0—a formulation of HTML 4.01 in XML—became a recommendation in 2000, and was revised in 2002. In other words, at the base of all modern web development is an eight-year-old technology.
HTML 4.01 may be a good, stable ground for developers to stand Read the rest of this entry »

An equal opportunity disease afflicts nearly every site now on the Web, from the humblest personal homepages to the multi-million-dollar sites of corporate giants. Cunning and insidious, the disease goes largely unrecognized because it is based on industry norms. Though their owners and managers may not know it yet, 99.9% of all websites are obsolete.
These sites may look and work all right in mainstream, desktop browsers whose names Read the rest of this entry »

JavaScript libraries have been around in one form or another for almost as long as JavaScript itself. As you go from project to project, it’s inevitable that you’ll find yourself reusing various functions. They become part of your core that you end up copying each time you start up something new. With any good library, code reuse leads to reliability; using the same code on multiple projects means that the code has been exposed to more Read the rest of this entry »
