The hype that has sprung up around the release of Adobe’s CS3 Studio products has virtually ignored the one feature that many people would instantly consider a critical reason for buying the Studio or the upgrade.
If you were to believe Adobe, this is the greatest software release of all time. Meanwhile, many consumers are excited about the new features in Dreamweaver CS3, Illustrator CS3, Photoshop CS3, Flash CS3, and Read the rest of this entry »

Taschen have turned their considerable talents for producing stunning art books to the computer, producing this lavish volume full of photographs of long-forgotten machines with names like ENIAC and UNIVAC and ZX80. Author Christian Wurster is a German designer and the inclusion of shorter essays by other German designers is a little bit short-sighted, considering that many of the machines mentioned were created in the United States. I recently came across this site, FreeRice.com, which I thought it is very nice and creative. It is nice because you can learn vocabulary and help end the world hunger. The idea is very creative. This is how it works: you go to FreeRice.com and play their vocabulary game, for each question answered correctly 10 grains of rice will be donated by the sponsors to help people living in poverty. It is a win-win situation - you Read the rest of this entry »

It’s hard to believe, but this year was my fifth attending the South by Southwest Interactive (SxSWi) festival in Austin, Texas. “Ride it till the wheels come off” has been my motto for the past couple of years, and this year, ride it I did. My sleep time ranged from about five hours down to precisely zero minutes on the last night. Despite the exhaustion, I came away as energized as I have for the past five years. First, I would like to thank Carsonified and Lisa Price (marketing director of Carsonified), who offered a free admission to this year hottest design event — Future of Web Design, New York 2007. For those who don’t know about the FOWD event, it is a design event and workshop organized by Carsonified. They also organize many other events, visit their website for more details. Anyway, if you are going to the event, feel free to contact me and perhaps we can meet up. And if you haven’t registered, it is still not too late yet (couple days left).

You’ve just launched your brand new database-driven Web site. You celebrate this milestone by logging into your database and adding a new row to the “articles” table, telling the world about how wonderful your new site is. You save, and voil! The article immediately appears in the news section on your site.
You’re pretty pleased with yourself, and schedule a lunch meeting with your biggest clients to boast Read the rest of this entry »

Until recently, cascading style sheets (CSS) were the most tragically hip technology available online. Touted as the way to create page layouts by, well, the folks that wrote the specification, style sheets were long denied any serious consideration in corporate development environments. Poor browser support stranded CSS in the "isn’t that nice" realm of Web development, a technology best relegated to the fringes of the Internet. For years, Read the rest of this entry »

Since the dawn of the World Wide Web, more than a billion web pages have been written. The corporate web site has grown from perhaps a dozen pages to, in some cases, several hundred. As the web has grown more and more complex, it is no longer possible for one person to wear all the hats necessary in designing comprehensive, information-rich sites. We have web programmers, web designers, content managers, usability testers, and project Read the rest of this entry »

First things first. In the interest of full disclosure, I contributed something called a market review of this book to the publishers, New Riders, this past summer. Due to my being such an august presence in Web book review circles (!), they wanted my opinion as to whether the book would be a success. This review, therefore, is based largely on what I told them.
Boy, has the Web design landscape sure changed in the past couple Read the rest of this entry »
