Color Theory for the Color-Blind
Posted on Oct 30, 2007 06:39:33 AM
Being color-blind can be a real obstacle for anyone involved in design. For Web designers, this does not need to be true. In any other field of design, it is expected that the designer has a keen eye for colors. It is generally assumed that you need to “just feel” when colors look good together and when they don’t. You should just be able to see them and say “Yeah, that looks good,” or “That looks really bad.” Read the rest of this entry »

Finally, the Facebook app that I designed for WIRED Science is officially launched. The app is called "WIRED SCIENCE: What Element Are You?" It is basically a fun app that lets you take a short quiz to find out what element you are from the periodic table. Then you can combine your element with your friends and it will tell you the relationship between the two of you. If you are interested in adding me to your network, here Read the rest of this entry »

Anyone writing JavaScript over the last year is likely to have at least a passing interest in the many and varied libraries that have sprung up in that time, and—if you fall into that category—you have probably heard the name of John Resig.
As author of the jQuery library, Resig has demonstrated his skill at abstracting and simplifying JavaScript functionality while keeping the code understandable. In this, his first book, Read the rest of this entry »

Frameworks have become a hot topic in the world of web development. Their popularity stems from the notion of “convention over configuration,” automating mundane tasks so you can focus on more unique and exciting aspects of a project. One such PHP framework is CodeIgniter, an open-source project by EllisLab, the company behind the popular CMSExpressionEngine. CI is an abstraction of the code that drives EE.

In the TABLEs, spacer GIFs and FONT tag soup way of designing Web pages, most of the questionable techniques were concerned with issues of typography and white space. As we begin the process of understanding Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) we’ll look at these issues.

A vast majority of Web sites are text-based. We have learned to embellish them with images and rich media, but the primary means of communication Read the rest of this entry »
Veen announces Start, a conference for starting your own company
Posted on Oct 14, 2007 06:10:13 AM
Just a short while ago Jeffery Veen, of Adaptive Path, MeasureMap and Google fame, announced a new conference called, simply, Start. According to the website, Start is a “one-day conference in San Francisco designed for smart, talented Web people to take hold of their ideas, follow their dreams, and start their own companies.” The speakers list is impressive, but eclipsed by the amazing price: $200, with full understanding that you might not want to tell your boss about it.

I am a teacher.
The official title on my business card is “Professor, Interactive Multimedia”, and I teach at the School of Media Studies and Information Technology at the Humber Institute of Technology and Advanced Learning in Toronto. I am willing to bet that a fair few of you reading that title will be thinking: “Those that can, do. Those that can’t, teach.” I thought I would deal with that one Read the rest of this entry »

In May 2001, I left Razorfish Los Angeles, where I was the creative lead in the broadband and future TV areas, to start a business in Germany. Since then, I have done nothing but motion design with clients and on promotional basis. My experiences in the US with the changing face of all communication media on screens, makes me a believer in motion design. It's the design on screens that are not bandwidth restricted, TV, iTV, broadband, broadband Read the rest of this entry »

Taking screenshots of web sites is probably one of the most commonly done tasks on the internet - doubly so if you have a blog or work as a web designer.
My pick from the list that will follow is Save as image - an aptly named Firefox plugin that lets you save a page, frame, or part of either as an image directly from Firefox.
After you install it on Firefox it will make a link after you right Read the rest of this entry »
