To Use or Not to Use: An XHTML Roadmap for Designers

January 26th, 2001 marks the first birthday of XHTML 1.0 as the W3C recommendation for Web markup. But XHTML has yet to toddle, yet to smile, yet to cry loud enough so as to get the attention of most Web designers.

Web standards designers heading toward academia?

Is web design and web standard thinking—formerly a self-teaching badge of honor—heading into academia? Today NYC’s School of Visual Arts announced a new MFA program in Interaction Design, to launch “fall of 2009”. The program plans to focus on “concepts central to interaction design, including design research, human-computer interaction, interface design, graphic design, information architecture, and ubiquitous computing.” While the curricula sounds solid enough, the potential faculty is the bigger news: “A portion of the faculty includes” Christopher Fahey, David Womack, Jason Santa Maria, Karen McGrane, Khoi Vinh, Paul Ford, Rachel Abrams and Jeffrey Zeldman, with Liz Danzico presiding as department chair.

Forum Setup for Designers: Putting Vanilla to the Test

Ever since the Romans built their famous meeting place, people have used forums to disseminate information. The internet is no exception. In the early days of the web, we had UBB.classic and a smattering of bulletin board setups to use as information exchanges. In the last couple of years, forum software has gotten easier to use and simpler to install. Now it seems like everyone has a forum. But is setting one up a Herculean task?
